Terms of use

What we promise, and what we don't.

By calling this API or using this data, you agree to what follows. It is written to be read, not to be survived.

This is a data source, not a crisis service

We publish information about crisis helplines. We do not operate any helpline, we do not answer calls or messages, and we do not contact anyone on your users' behalf. Nothing here is a substitute for local emergency services.

If you build on this API, the duty of care you owe your users remains yours. Surfacing a number from this directory does not transfer it to us.

Obligations that actually matter

Most terms pages bury the real rules. These three are the ones we care about, because breaking them causes harm rather than inconvenience:

  • Present contact details exactly as returned. Do not reformat, localise, abbreviate, correct or infer a phone number, SMS code or URL. A number that has been "tidied up" may not connect, and a crisis call that fails to connect is the harm this directory exists to prevent.
  • Do not present a record as more certain than its grades say. Every record carries existence and accuracy grades and a lastVerified date. If you surface a weakly graded or stale record, say so.
  • Do not invent coverage we do not have. If a query returns nothing for a country, that means we have nothing verified — not that no help exists there. Do not fill the gap with a guessed number.

Access and fair use

Anonymous access is rate limited by IP. Keyed access is rate limited per key according to its tier. Limits and remaining quota are returned on /v1/* responses in the X-RateLimit-* headers. Do not attempt to evade these limits by rotating IPs or keys.

The dataset, its grades, rationales and provenance metadata remain ours. You may use records returned to you to help your users find support. You may not bulk-extract the dataset to republish it as a competing directory, or use it to train a model to reproduce it.

We may change, suspend or withdraw a key where use threatens the availability of the service for others. We would rather email you first, and normally will.

Accuracy, and the limits of it

We work hard on accuracy and we publish our methodology so you can judge it for yourself. But helplines change numbers, change hours, and close, sometimes without notice. A grade is a statement of confidence at the time of verification. It is not a guarantee that a number will connect today.

The service and its data are provided "as is", without warranties of any kind, express or implied, including fitness for a particular purpose. We do not warrant that the service will be uninterrupted, or that any record is current.
