What we collect, and what we never see.

This API answers questions about places to get help. It is not told who is asking or why. That distinction shapes everything below.

What the API never receives

A request to this service carries a country, a topic, and optional filters such as region or language. It does not carry the end user's message, conversation, name, contact details, or any account identifier from your product.

If you are building on this API, do not send us the content of a distressed user's message. We do not want it, we have no use for it, and no field in this API is designed to hold it. Query with a country and a topic.

What we do process

  • Your IP address, when you call without an API key. It is the identity anonymous rate limits are counted against. It is stored in a rate-limit row keyed to the current time window, and appears in request logs.
  • Your API key identifier, when you call with one. Keyed requests are counted against the key rather than the IP.
  • Request metadata — the endpoint or tool called, the country and topic queried, the response status, the number of records returned, and how long it took. This is what tells us the service is working and where coverage is thin.
  • Contact details you give us, if you email us or request an API key — your address and whatever you write in the message.

Rate-limit counters are keyed to a time window and are only meaningful for that window. Request logs are retained by our infrastructure provider on their standard retention schedule and are not kept indefinitely by us.

Who else is involved

The service runs on Cloudflare, which serves this site, runs the API, stores the data, and handles email sent to this domain. Cloudflare processes requests on our behalf as our infrastructure provider.

This site loads web fonts from Google Fonts, which means your browser makes a request to Google when you view these pages. The API itself loads nothing third-party.

We do not run analytics, advertising, or tracking scripts on this site. We do not set cookies. We do not sell or share data with anyone, and there is nothing here that would be useful to sell.

Your rights, and how to reach us

Depending on where you live, you may have rights to access, correct or delete personal data we hold about you, or to object to how we process it. In practice the only personal data we are likely to hold is an IP address in a short-lived rate-limit row, an API key record, or an email you sent us.

To make a request, or to ask anything about this page, email hello@globalhelplines.org. We are operated by Gabbatron Pty Ltd in Australia, and are subject to the Australian Privacy Principles.
